Michelle has been drawing, painting and making stories since childhood. She spent a summer studying art and illustration at Rhode Island School of Design and did her undergraduate education at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. She then returned to Long Island to become a reporter for newspapers. During her six years as a journalist she lived in Southampton, Queens, New Jersey and Philadelphia. She loved interviewing people and finding quirky stories. Today Michelle is a full-time artist and entrepreneur, and teaches printmaking to children and adults. She also devotes some time to working for a Brooklyn-based nonprofit. She has shown her work in group shows in New York and sells her work at markets and shops in New York City. She loves the city, the country, family, friends, running, music, food, wine, and making things. She makes her home in Brooklyn.

Inspired by her Grandmother's repurposing of silk neckties into ornately embroidered pillows. Deponte began designing a collection of accessories. Our name is very special, originally the pet name for Deponte's Mom when she was a little girl, it was lovingly passed down and has been a representation of the independent creative spirit ever since.

Handmade in Boston MA, Lilian Asterfield's designs feature vintage materials transformed into uniquely clever accessories for eco savvy dressers. Eye-catching color combinations and juxtaposed prints make each piece a wearable work of art and totally one of a kind. The signature collection of hand stitched necktie scarves, the first of it's kind, continue to be our most popular pieces. The Hunter Velvet collection, Lilian Asterfield little sister and a new addition to the line in 2010, is a medley of repurposed vintage scarves that offer soft feminine accents for Spring/Summer seasons.

With the help of Nicole Deponte's B.F.A. in sculpture from Massechusettes Collage of Art & Design and 15 years of sales, design, merchandising and managing experience, Deponte's Lilian Asterfield label is redefining the world's perception of the necktie, offering innovative alternatives for both men and women. About the work:
This is a selection from a series that John made on the Gowanus Canal in 2009. During this time, many commercially zoned sites and structures were in the process of being rezoned for residence. These oil slicks represent this neighborhood’s ever-present connection to its rich and unregulated industrial history that spanned over a century. In 2010, the Gowanus Canal was added to the EPA’s Superfund National Priorities List and a thorough cleanup in now underway.

About the artist:
John Cyr (b. 1981) is a Brooklyn based photographer, printer and educator. In 2010, Cyr received his MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City. In 2011, he was the recipient of the New York Photo Award in the Fine Art Series category and was juror Anthony Bannon’s selection for the Project Prize in the Daylight/Center for Documentary Studies Photo Awards. Cyr's work has been published in PHOTO+ Magazine, Rizzoli's New York: A Photographer's City, and Humble Arts Foundation's Collector's Guide to New Art Photography and can be found in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian, the George Eastman House and the American Museum of Natural History. His work has been featured in Time’s Lightbox, NPR's The Picture Show, Wired's Raw File, PDN's Photo of the Day, and aCurator. Cyr is an adjunct faculty member at the International Center of Photography. In addition to working on his own photographic projects and teaching, he owns and operates Silver 68, a traditional silver gelatin printing studio in Dumbo, Brooklyn’s Photo District.

Tim originally started out studying “the (negative) space between type”. His mentor Eric Lockrane told him that photography is one of two things, either a golden conduit or a culdesac. Because of this comment, Tim used photography as a mechanism to explore life and external representations of feelings, thru colour, form, light, texture and of course negative space.

“In every-thing there is a sense of poetry waiting and it is always found inside”

In ’95 Tim came to NYC from the UK and now shoots for The London Times, The Guardian, The New York Times, Liquid Magazine, FHM, Blue Note Records, Atlantic Records, Verve Records, Comcast and various other magazines and design firms. He has shot various famous faces including Jeff Koons Julian Schnabel and Paul Dano.

As one of the founding partners of Trunk, Radka Osickova provides the majority of the jewelry in the store including the delicately crocheted earrings, necklaces and pins. The jewelry is made with a delicate hand from oxidized silver and gold filled wires. Below are some questions and answers to why and how she came to bring the old fashioned technique of crochet to modern accessory design.

Where are you from?
In my previous life I was Brazilian. (I grew up in the Czech Republic)

What inspires you?
My creative friends. Talking to people from different backgrounds. Dried plants in the late autumn, spikey leaves, chestnuts on the ground.

What is your creative background?
Despite the pain and the challenge that comes with crocheting wire, the resulting shapes are well worth the effort. I was let to crochet jewelry thru my affinity with knitting and sweater development. Hence, my ten year career as a technical designer mostly working in sweaters. Some of my fondest memories are from knitting while to the wind blowing through our enormous walnut tree in the backyard of my childhood home.

In what location do you do most of your creative brainstorming?
Because I live in such a crowded, noisy city, I need to escape to the nearest open space populated with trees, grass and squirrels. That place happens to be Prospect Park where I am often visualizing my creations while running, biking and walking.

What is your favorite detail of your designs?
As with many of my designs, while I am in the middle of creating a piece, I suddenly see a inspiring new shape emerge! I enjoy putting pieces together in unexpected ways, such as in the styles with interlocking circles. In fact the very foundation of my art: metal+crochet exemplifies my desire to create unexpected harmony. I also like starting with flat shapes and finishing with pieces sewn or hammered into 3-dimensions.

What is your favorite current trend?
Jeggings!!!?? I laughed at them until I owned a pair! The best pants to ride my bike in when it gets colder (otherwise I ride in Aimee G’s skirts that I pretty much live in).

What in your wardrobe do you wish you could own ten of?
Sweaters, sweaters, sweaters. (And I actually do. More than 10-A lot-And can’t get enough of them.)

What is your favorite accessory?
My bike.

What would you say is one of your most endearing quirks?
Foreign humor(mine). Sometimes I am the only one who understands my jokes.

Once upon a time, a Russian artist prophesied the careers of her three Israeli granddaughters, Dina, Yael, and Tamar Magnes.

Trunk: Where are you from?
Mauro Bianucci: I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina

Trunk: What inspires you?
MB: Anything can inspire anyone. For me, from a massive museum exhibition, to the silliest chat with a friend, from a studied seam detail to some random natural formation...

Trunk: What is your creative background?
MB: I’m an architect!

Trunk: In what location do you do most of your creative brainstorming?
MB: Most of the good stuff happens during the morning, in my workshop. Which is very conveniently downstairs and around the corner from my home.

Trunk: What music if any do you put on when you are creating?
MB: I usually work better in silence. In the evenings there is a person in the workshop that DJs, anything from Jazz to R&B, Afrobeat and Funk...He isn't hired for it, he (and us) just enjoy it...

Trunk: Where did the concept of your current collection come from?
MB: The Sleeve Collection started with trying to find a way to have a sleeve for a computer that didn’t have any zippers, magnets or any unnecessary pieces of hardware. The look of a more ‘traditional’ envelope came as a result of the closing mechanism...

Trunk: What is your favorite detail on your designs?
MB: I like that they are pretty anonymous and ‘un-branded’ yet somehow recognizable. I also like the fact that they seem to make up a family even though the materials are different. They share a logic.

Trunk: What materials do you use and where do they come from?
MB: For the felt collection we use industrial wool felt. It is sourced from Patagonian sheep. A percentage of the wool is recycled, and there is also a percentage of recycled mixed fibers. (these percentages vary from batch to batch.)

For the Leather Collection we use vegetable tanned cow-hide leather. It is from a 150 year old tannery in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is still run by the same family, I think they are on the 6th generation now. It is the last one in Buenos Aires producing these kind of hides. Also, the straps for all our bags are from the same leather.

For the ØW Collection we use a very durable and strong synthetic material, similar to Cordura / Nylon. It is a very ‘common’ material that we chose to use with the waterproofing on the outside, which is unusual to see.

September Exhibit: Elements of Style
Featuring artist Francois Ilseher
As you look at the collages and photographs of Francois Ilnseher, Swiss born and New York based artist and fashion industry veteran the word that comes to mind is "decollage". The pieces that Francois has created for the "Elements of Style" Exhibit are his reflections of his many years of intimate involvement with the fashion world. They offer a glimpse into the at once glamorous and frustrating world where the image rules and the creator of the image is frequently a figure in the shadow. He has worked with such magazines as Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Elle and Glamour and has worked with many noted photographers.

Trunk designers exploring their individual "elements"
Trunk designers are reinterpreting William Strunk Jr's 1918 "The Elements of Style", a compositional guide for writers, to apply to fashion and design. The five designers will be exploring individual elements including: history, consciousness, nature, shape and texture. Through a 'composition' using either fashion, accessories or furniture design each creator will exhibit an 'element' that she feels is intrinsic to her view of what 'Style' is.

The birth of 'naturevsfuture®' was in the spring of 2002 by Brooklyn born Nina Valenti. Launched 6 years after graduating Parsons & designing streetwear, Valenti needed to create her own line that would expose her unique aesthetic. The name was inspired by the designer's belief that there is a constant struggle between nature and future, a pressure between organic forces and technological ones. "The more we advance the more we need to consider nature before we deplete it. In this tension to find balance is the living energy of the collection and hence the name." says Valenti.

Designed with an eco-conscious approach, 'naturevsfuture®' acknowledges the increased environmental concerns & the need to preserve & respect the earth while advancing. Valenti chooses to incorporate mainly organic, sustainable, renewable, biodegradable & recycled materials in the collection each season. Mixing such fabrics like organic cotton, organic wool, hemp, soy, bamboo, seacell® (seaweed), lyocell (wood pulp), Ingeo™ (created from plant sugars such as corn), along with recycled & technological fabrics such as Polartec® (made from soda pop bottles & industry waste) she creates pieces that have a futuristic edge yet are inherently classic.

Brooklyn-based artist, Faune Yerby, creates wonderful collages with images from New York.

Each piece speaks of Beauty, Nature and Science. The smallest things in Nature are given the same weight as those normally regarded as the most important. The work has all to do with the connections and coexistence of different places .

The work is designed to be read at different distances, as the meaning follows on different levels. From a distance, they may appear to be stain glass windows. Washes of color and geometric forms. Mosaics.

The grid suspends dichotomies in tension. A sequential story all-at-once.

As one approaches, a different work appears. Images set like jewels. Stories reveal themselves from the interplay between images, meeting for the first time. The vertical and horizontal strips of images live like little films or plays.

Using nineteenth-century photography techniques, and modern chemicals, I try to evoke the beauty of nature and a bygone time. All photographs are original prints, which have been toned and hand colored.

During this year's New York Photo Festival, Trunk is proud to feature works by Erik Shirai.

Erik Shirai is a self-taught photographer and cinematographer working around the world. He considers himself a vagabond, developing his intuitions to understand his surroundings and the people that inhabit it. His focus is to document the human condition and to present a voice, allowing people to tell their stories. His goal is not only to bring awareness but also to bridge the idea that we are all human and that our similarities outweigh our differences. And that ‘being human’ is a universal language that we all need to understand no matter how difficult it may be to perceive the circumstances.

Erik Shirai has showcased his work in many group exhibitions; he was one of few photographers selected in the exhibit entitled “Documentarian” juried by MAGNUM photographer Eli Reed. He was also nominated in last years NY Photo Awards at the New York Photo Festival.

He launched his own production company, Cebu Osani Films in 2008. The same ideal that was behind his photographs has been the foundation of his production company.

Erik Shirai is currently based in Brooklyn.

Shara Porter is a designer and artist who makes a career out of giving vintage accessories a new life. She received her MFA in Textiles from UMASS Dartmouth in 2004 and started her own business soon after. She spends many hours in thrift stores shopping for vintage leather accessories, then cleans and mends the items, and adds her signature printed image, making each piece current and unique.
